AK Built is a civil general contractor for both public and private stakeholders in Alaska. AK Built performs construction and design services with an in-house team experienced in both small- and large-scale construction and design projects. TEAM

Project Manager

James Colles, PE

James is a professionally licensed civil engineer with experience in materials testing, construction, construction administration, design, and project management. He has worked as a contractor on residential, commercial, local agency, and Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities projects, overseeing the coordination of subcontractors, logistics, work plan developments, scheduling, estimating, and quality control. James has received his certification for Construction Quality Management (CQM) through US Army Corps of Engineers and Naval Facilities. James has experience in establishing a nationally accredited materials laboratory and developing concrete mix designs adhering to Alaska DOT&PF specifications. In addition to construction experience, James has spent time as a designer for public and private projects for site developments, highways, and airports.

Project Manager

Robert Colles, PE

Robert is a professionally licensed civil engineer with a history of design engineering, materials testing, construction administration, and project management. Robert has designed and overseen the delivery of projects to include alternatives development, design selection, estimating, specification development, scheduling, and project phasing. He has performed technical services for clients to include development of quality control plans, environmental protection plans, waste management plans, and submittal preparation. Robert has worked with clients to select materials, develop schedules, and construct work. In addition, Robert is an experienced drafter and modeler aiding in the development of site grading plans and quantity take-offs.

Administrative Operations Manager

Victoria Colles, MPH

Victoria brings a wealth of experience and a Master’s in Public Health, which strengthens her ability to address the environmental aspects of AK Built’s projects. Over her career, she has collaborated with local, state, and federal government agencies on a wide range of initiatives. Her expertise spans laboratory testing and quality control, environmental compliance, and oil and hazardous substance spill response planning.

Victoria’s notable accomplishments include developing and updating regional response plans, creating spill response checklists and procedures, serving as a subject matter expert on conference panels, maintaining quality control measures, and participating in national laboratory accreditation audits. In addition to her technical skills, Victoria excels in communication, coordination, research, and compliance. She plays a key role in standardizing work procedures, streamlining documentation, and establishing a robust safety program. Victoria also oversees project scheduling, manages administrative tasks, and provides on-site support to ensure seamless organization and efficiency at every project stage. Her combination of academic expertise and hands-on experience makes her an invaluable asset in addressing environmental challenges and upholding AK Built’s commitment to excellence.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

MSB Station 12-5: Asphalt Roadway and Concrete Curb

AK Built delivered a design-build project to enhance the fire truck water fill area at MSB Station 12-5. The scope included:

Site Design: Engineering was performed in house for the 90-foot-long, 19-foot-wide asphalt driveway with curbs on both sides. The design accommodates the larger turning radii of firefighting vehicles and allow for ease of snow removal.
Concrete Work: Concrete formwork and placement were completed by AK Built’s skilled team.
Paving: Our trusted partner, Northland Property Services, performed the hot mix asphalt paving.
Project Management: Ensured all activities aligned with the Borough’s direction to meet the project’s schedule and specifications.

AK Built’s expertise in managing teams and coordinating subcontractors ensured the project was completed efficiently and successfully.

Residential Septic System

AK Built provides cradle to grave septic system services to provide property owners with stress free experience.

Site Survey: Survey and evaluate existing site, surroundings, and soil conditions.
Design: Provide in-house cost effective engineered septic systems.
Installation: Provide regulatory preconstruction notifications, construct septic system, and participate in inspections as required.
Documentation: Submit asbuilts, inspection reports, and close out permits.

Talkeetna River Bridge Rehabilitation (ARRC MP 227.1)

Work inspected on this 100-year-old through truss bridge includes:

Walkway and Bearing Removal: Monitoring removal and disposal of the existing trainman’s walkway and truss bearings.
Walkway Installation: Installing a new trainman’s walkway and resolving conflicts between the newly installed components and the existing bridge elements.
Structural Components Installation: Reviewing the new bridge structural rehabilitation components for proper installation.
Abutment Stabilization: Monitoring stabilization measures for bridge abutments.
Temporary Structures: Ensuring scaffolding adheres to approved work plans.
Public Outreach: Maintained communication with the local and recreating public to keep them informed of construction impacts and walkway closures.

AK Built's participation in this ARRC project helped ensure the successful rehabilitation of the 100-year-old through truss bridge crossing the Talkeetna River.
